BETAtherm® – High-Performance Wire Solutions for Apparatus and Machinery Engineering

Electric vehicle charging station with open electrical cabinet – cabling and connections in an industrial environment.

When electrical systems must operate reliably under demanding conditions, wires are required to do more than just meet standards. Studer Cables’ BETAtherm® product family has been developed specifically for high temperatures, mechanical stress, and stringent fire safety requirements. The design of these wires combines application-specific certifications, tightly controlled manufacturing processes, and insulation materials whose performance has been proven in practice. This ensures a long service life and reliable operation in a variety of industrial applications.

The insulation used in the BETAtherm® range is based on radiation cross-linked polyolefin, which withstands long-term thermal stress and offers flame-retardant properties without the use of halogens. For example, the BETAtherm® 145 wire operates within a temperature range of -55…+145 °C and tolerates peaks of up to +280 °C. Compared to PVC-insulated wires, it maintains its mechanical and electrical properties even during prolonged use. BETAtherm® wires do not emit toxic or corrosive gases in the event of a fire, and their smoke emission is very low. This enhances safety particularly in confined environments such as industrial plants, vehicles, and control panels.

Applications and technical features

The product family includes various versions with different temperature ratings and voltage levels. Depending on the type, they comply with common European and international standards such as UL (Underwriters Laboratories, USA), CSA (Canadian Standards Association, Canada), CPR (Construction Products Regulation, EU), and DNV (Det Norske Veritas). These certifications make them suitable for a wide range of demanding applications across Europe and North America.

The following table outlines key application areas and related benefits:

ApplicationBenefits
Industrial machinery and automationDurable choice for internal control panel wiring
Charging stations and e-mobilityDesigned for high temperatures and currents
Energy storage systemsMeets strict fire safety requirements
Mining industryUV, oil, and impact-resistant design for harsh conditions
Marine and offshoreCertified according to DNV/GL, LR, and BV standards

The BETAtherm® product range offers options for different application needs. The entry-level BETAtherm® 90 is CPR-approved and halogen-free. BETAtherm® 145 and its UL/CSA/3271-certified variants support voltages up to 1000 V. For particularly high loads, BETAtherm® 155 meets Class F temperature requirements and is also available with UL 3289 certification. The range also includes other variants with different voltage ratings and approval combinations.

The thermally conductive sheath used in BETAtherm® 145 improves heat dissipation and offers several benefits: lower electrical resistance, a thinner and lighter design, space and material savings, and a reduced carbon footprint in both manufacturing and use. A 6 mm² BETAtherm® wire can transmit the same current as a conventional 10 mm² PVC wire – without overheating.

Radiation cross-linking enhances long-term stability

Unlike chemical cross-linking, radiation cross-linking (electron beam cross-linking) does not require additives or leave reaction residues. The method also supports environmentally responsible manufacturing by reducing the use of chemicals and process waste. BETAtherm® wires are produced at Studer Cables’ own production centre in Switzerland, ensuring precise quality control and the management of sustainable supply chains.
The radiation-based method improves the thermal resistance and structural stability of the insulation. At a continuous operating temperature of 90 °C, the estimated service life can reach up to 220,000 hours – equivalent to around 25 years of continuous use. This long lifetime significantly reduces the need for maintenance and replacement, especially in demanding industrial environments.

The BETAtherm® product family from Studer Cables offers wire technology engineered to meet stringent safety and performance requirements. It is designed for applications where reliability is not a bonus – it’s essential.
