Podis® – A Modern Approach to EV Charging Infrastructure

Wieland Electric podis®

The growing popularity of electric vehicles is driving the need to develop charging infrastructure for both new building projects and existing parking facilities. This trend presents challenges related to cabling, space requirements, costs, and system flexibility. The conventional approach, where each charging point is supplied by its own cable from the main distribution board, requires substantial lengths of cable and takes up significant space. Making changes afterwards is also time-consuming and often expensive.

Podis®, developed by Wieland Electric, offers an efficient alternative. It is based on decentralised power distribution, where a single supply line—a flat cable—distributes power across the entire parking area. Charging points are connected to the flat cable at the desired locations using connection modules, without the need to cut or strip the cable. This method reduces the risk of errors and frees up space, as only one common flat cable is required instead of multiple individual supply lines.

Efficient installation and flexible scalability

One of the key advantages of Podis® is its simple and efficient installation process. Manufacturer-supplied connection modules and preconfigured cables reduce the number of installation steps and eliminate unnecessary handling of conductors.

Because a single supply cable can serve multiple charging points, less cable is required and the overall space needed is reduced. Installation can also be carried out in stages—for example, starting with only part of the parking spaces—and later expanded as demand grows, without the need to modify the original setup. A single system can supply up to around 20 charging points, making it suitable for both smaller parking areas and larger installations. Data transmission can be implemented on a case-by-case basis, either with separate cabling installed alongside the flat cable (using integrated clips) or wirelessly.

Reliable and long-lasting performance in demanding environments

Parking facilities place high demands on power distribution systems, as they are often exposed to moisture, temperature changes and mechanical stress. Podis® is designed to operate reliably under these conditions over the long term. Maintenance-free connection modules and its IP65-rated design ensure safe operation. UV resistance and robust mechanical properties further support consistent performance throughout the system’s service life.

Podis® is based on a modular structure that makes planning easier and allows protective components to be integrated without additional construction work. It is compatible with charging stations from different manufacturers and ensures a modern, streamlined installation.

Summary

Podis® from Wieland Electric offers a modern and efficient solution for implementing EV charging infrastructure. Decentralised power distribution reduces the amount of cable required and the overall space needed, simplifies installation, and enables charging points to be added flexibly as demand grows. The system is suitable for a wide range of applications, from new building projects to existing parking facilities. With its long service life, high reliability, and minimal maintenance requirements, Podis® provides a solid foundation for the future growth of electric mobility.
